Proactive Alarm Generation

For that reason, the correct definition of the variables that will be monitored is essential. These variables, for platform software, should be defined from the business point of view.

The process has three well-defined stages

  • Definition / Gathering
  • Collection / Storage
  • Analysis / Alarms Generation

Definition – Gathering

In our industry, provisioning may have several interfaces to external network elements. There will be:

  • The number of incoming transactions, differentiated by type, if they show an error and its completion status.
  • Internal and external processing times. With these KPI, the overhead or internal processing time can be calculated.

There are different methods to get this information.

1. Log Files Analysis 

The process consists of the post-processing of log files generated by different means. By information filtering methods, the interested data is gathered.

2. Periodical Queries to a Database

3. Information From Each Platform Module

This is the best method, the most performant and recommended. Here, each of the modules will independently send information on their own KPIs.

Collection – Storage

All this information must be collected by agents specially configured for this task. The data must also be protected in a centralized database for storage.

This database should preferably be a time series type. This kind allows the possibility of storing data series grouped in a point of time and named metric or measurement.

With these measurements, the Graphical Dashboard can be made and presented.

All those KPI can be graphically presented, beyond the importance of their storage to have historical data and establish trends.

Analysis – Alarms Generation

The third stage provides an output of the process. These alarms must be based on comparisons and trends.

As we showed before, one of the keys to obtaining trends is KPI samples storage. This stored information can be analyzed to get trends based on the generation of averages.

Those numbers, compared with real-time data, may trigger alarms when a defined threshold is crossed.

These alarms can be sent to interested parties through different means.

  • Customer’s NMS Integration
  • e-mail
  • Instant messenger

This method of alerting work as an early warning or proactive alarm monitoring, and allows us to analyze and even neutralize the inconvenience before the end-customer experiences the issue.
