“I find your lack of faith disturbing”
Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope states it clearly: if you don’t have faith in your mission, you won’t meet the goals of your organization. A team without trust isn’t really a team: it’s just a group of individuals, working together. It’s essential for everyone on a team to have confidence in the product or service your business is offering.
It doesn’t matter how capable or talented your people are; they may never reach their full potential if trust isn’t present.
When trust is in place, each individual in the team becomes stronger, because he or she is part of an active, cohesive group. When people trust one another, the group can achieve truly meaningful goals.
Let go of your fear
In Star Wars Episode 3, Revenge of the Sith, Yoda tells Anakin “Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose”. What does Master Yoda mean?
Get past your natural tendencies, jump out of your comfort zone, don’t let challenges or something you are not accustomed to hold you back.
One of the biggest drives behind human decision-making is that we are loss averse. People would rather avoid a loss than acquire a gain – even when it’s irrational. Don’t be afraid to lose in the face of a prospect of more significant winnings.
Build the best team
No business grows by itself. Companies are well-oiled machines that have people, infrastructure, and a set of systems working together to produce things or services of value. One of the most significant components to be successful is having a great team, which work hard and know what they are doing.
In the Saga (from Episode IV forward), we could see a rebellion that was clearly outnumbered; however, they achieved the goal they were pursuing, and why was that? Because they had the talent and they all worked like a real team.
So, invest in your team, hire people that will work well together they’ll do amazing things for your business. A small team with a shared vision is more likely to turn that vision into a reality.
Become a trusted advisor
At its core, being a mentor is being a trusted advisor (Qui-Gon Jinn to Obi-Wan Kenobi, he to Luke, and Yoda to all who need advice). It involves making yourself available to support and advise someone when they need it, always keeping that person’s best interests in mind.
It’s imperative that you find your style for all of this. Trusted advisors are authentic, genuine, real, individual people, who give sound advice, help everyone, and get genuinely involved.
Believe in your cause
Here’s some advice that Obi-Wan Kenobi gave to Luke Skywalker: “Let go your conscious self and act on instinct.” Trust in everything you have learned and experienced, which guided you to this point and gave you the strength you need to get to this point. The voice in your gut is wise, and it can push you to do something that feels right and yield better results.
May the Force be with you.
